Summer/Autumn/Peak-Season Farm Share
F.A.Q.

Q: What are the actual contents of a weekly Farm Share?

A: Your weekly Peak-Season, Summer, or Autumn Farm Share will contain a balanced selection of the best vegetables our fields have to offer each week. The following are sample contents of an individual Farm Share from three different weeks in the season... Early Summer: 2 lbs. fresh fava beans, 1 bunch rainbow chard, 1 head fennel, ½ lb. mesclun, 2 lbs. new potatoes, 1 lb. rainbow beets, 1 bunch thyme, 1 bulb fresh garlic, 1 bunch hakurei turnips, 1 lb. summer squash, 1 head Boston lettuce; Late Summer: 1 lb. heirloom tomatoes, 1 lb. beefsteak tomatoes, 1 lb. golden Roma tomatoes, 1 pint rainbow cherry tomatoes, 2 lbs. fairy tale eggplant, 1 head broccoli, 2 lbs. Persian cucumbers, ¼ lb. Hungarian hot wax peppers, 1 lb. bell peppers, 1 bunch scallions, 2 heads green oakleaf lettuce, 1 bunch cilantro; Autumn: 2 lbs. rainbow carrots, 1 lb. parsnips, 1 butternut squash, 1 lb. watermelon radishes, 1 bunch Tuscan kale, ½ lb. arugula, 1 lb. leeks, 1 head escarole, 2 lbs. Kennebec potatoes, 1 bunch fresh dill, 1 head Boston bibb lettuce.

Q: Will my weekly Farm Share have too much or too little produce for my family's vegetable needs?

A: Your weekly Farm Share is a half-bushel produce box, measuring 9"x9"x13", filled to the brim with a sampling of 9-to-12 different varieties of our vegetables on any given week, selected from over 100 varieties of vegetables we grow throughout the entire season. Households with modest vegetable needs will often share a CSA membership with a friend or neighbor; households with more substantial vegetable appetites will often purchase multiple CSA memberships. On average, one Farm Share membership per household is a great start toward eating lots of fresh, delicious produce all week long.

Q: What happens when I'm out of town or for some reason can't pick up my Farm Share on a given week?

A: We encourage you to send a friend or neighbor to pick up your Farm Share for you; they can simply check your name off our list, take a box, and enjoy!

Q: If I am unable to pick up my Farm Share for an unexpected reason, will it be available to pick up the following day?

A: It is important that the veggies don't sit around between pickup days, so Farm Shares can generally only be picked up on the designated day. Un-picked-up Farm Shares are donated to charities, sent home with members of our farm crew, put to use in restaurant kitchens, etc.

Q: Can I switch my pickup location or day mid-season?

A: Absolutely, if it's a one-time switch for the remainder of the season, but we have learned that it’s hard for us to keep track of temporary back-and-forth switches.

Q: Are Siena Farms CSA memberships refundable or transferable?

A: They are not refundable, but they are transferable. That is, if you realize at some point after purchasing a membership that it's not working for you, we will not be able to refund your purchase. Instead, you'd be welcome to find a friend or neighbor to take over the membership for you. This blanket no-refund policy is central to the integrity of CSA as a business model, for any farm that relies on CSA memberships as a substantial portion of their annual income. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Q: What happens to my Farm Share if Siena Farms experiences a natural disaster such as flooding or hail during the season that wipes out most or all of its crops?

A: Someday, that could happen, as we saw happen to many farms in Vermont in 2011 after Hurricane Irene. One of the truly progressive aspects of the CSA model is that customers share the risks and the rewards of the growing season with their farmers. Meantime, we'll focus relentlessly on the rewards, and do our very best to prepare for the variety of challenges the natural world has up its sleeve!

Q: For pickup days which fall on national holidays (July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day), do the Farm Shares get delivered / picked up on a different day that week?

A: Sometimes, yes, but we'll alert you to any holiday changes ahead of time...

Q: Does Siena Farms have any work requirements or Pick-Your-Own like some CSA's?

A: Nope – we take care of all the planting, growing and harvesting, as you'll have enough work cut out for yourself in the kitchen! However, we schedule a couple of large-group volunteer harvest days in the fall to help pull in our fall/winter storage crops (like carrots!), which is a ton of fun, a ton of help to the farm, and a nice opportunity for our members to experience the deeply gratifying activity of harvesting beautiful vegetables with us.

Q: Are the recipes in the weekly CSA newsletter accessible to home cooks preparing food for their families?

A: Some of the recipes are inspiring in their simplicity and others are more complex. They all will focus on the contents of a given week's Farm Share, and aim to help you enjoy the delicious experience of seasonal eating in New England.
